The Push Music best of 09′ mixtape

09

Better late than never. Originally put together way back in December this club mix has been in digital limbo for a couple of weeks due to some serious hardware failures. Download for a full run down of what was rocking the Push Music box over last year with some scratching and beat juggling. Club style rather than the staple diet of Indie and Electro but oh, it’s so on!

Push Music swung by EC2 for an impromptu gig at the Queen Of Hoxton on the 14/01/10. I won’t lie it wasn’t the busiest night ever (Early Jan, Thursday, my dog ate my homework type excuses) but hats off to all that came down for a drink and dance (Personal highlight being the special brew butt crack security at the bagel shop)

We’re in the process of finalising Push Music dates for 2010 and the artwork for our next gig is back from Adam Doyle so loads to look out for over the next week or so. Keep those peepers peeled!

Push Music at the Queen Of Hoxton 14/01/10

PM QOH

The snow’s getting boring now, so all inside for a last minute Push Music Indie Disco as we return to the Queen of Hoxton for impromptu Thursday night session.

Relax. Drink. Dance; Up to you.

Known for rocking a crowd with our unique hybrid DJ sets. Expect a unique mixture of house, electro and re-edited material from the world of soul/funk, indie and alternative. No one said the dance floor had to groove to just one genre did they?

If you don’t know and you should by the way…

The Queen of Hoxton

Bar, club and art collective, the Queen of Hoxton holds court in the heart of the East End, entertaining her neighbours with a tight programme of music accompanied by a rolling gallery of art installations, photographic exhibitions, fringe theatre and screenings. The ground floor is an intricate blend of window etchings, graffiti, ivy and a landscape of benches and screens . While the games room takes in table-football, vintage pinball and a unique Brighton pier 1960’s gaming rarity. A youth club for the adults of the east side.

Charlotte Gainsbourg & Beck “Heaven Can Wait”

I’ll be honest, as blogging goes I’m f*cking lazy. Unless it’s promoting a night or podcast  I won’t be tapping away about the latest producer or sub genre. However sometimes a music video hits me so hard I need to share it. Charlotte Gainsbourg & Beck’s “Heaven Can Wait” might just be the greatest video ever made. Concept – take a hundred stories and smash them into one video. Weird, obscure and visually stunning, each shot somehow seems to have a back story. A montage from the dark side that seems to glide in time with Gainsbourg’s vocal and it’s southern hick style backing.

Directed by 09 super man Keith Schofield ‘Heaven Can Wait’ already sits within a strong portfolio of videos.  Check Justices’ remix of Lenny Kravitz doing the rounds and if you missed it the Diesel NSFW.

Push Music play Tigerlilly bar 08/01/10

08/01/10

Ease yourself into 2010 with Push Music at Tigerlily Bar on Friday 8th of Jan. Expect a unique mixture of Indie, electro and re-edited material from the world of rock and soul. We won’t be grooving to just one genre. It’s also free.

Happy New Year

So that’s it. The noughties and 09’ are over.  Dubstep hit daytime airwaves, Diplo and Switch swapped Camden for Kingston and certain arms of the music press hailed the disco revival (Although Todd Tejre, Greg Wilson and any DJ worth their pay check have been playing and re-editing disco since erm…disco)

It’s been a steep learning curve for all involved in Push Music and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.  In 12 months we’ve played at over 15 different venues playing tracks that made you dance and scratch your head in equal measure. Thanks to friends, friends of friends, podcast listeners and klub kids that have made it through the doors into a Push Music party. As a heartfelt thank you we’ll keep dropping 60 minutes podcasts throughout 2010. Please keep the feedback coming, it’s good that people appreciate something different.

Back to the music. 2009 became the year the dance borderlines where crossed. House DJ’s played Dubstep (Skream’s stripped down amen loving re-fix of in for the Kill dominating sets)  Drum and Bass had a definitive year in the overground and underground with stand out albums for Sub Focus, Alex Perez and Danny Byrd.

Fidget became a dirty word as UK Funky took over London’s urban scene with a few stand out tracks but ultimately becoming a grooveless sub hybrid of UK garage. On the subject of UKG, Joy Orbison took major influence from the atmospheric dubbier tracks of the 90’s (think Zed Bias & Groove Chronicles) and injected some soul into the dubstep sound with ‘Hyph Mngo’,  Orbison’s eerie stomper sitting high as the tune of the year for most critics.  After inventing the genre the Yanks tried as hard as they could to destroy house (With the help of the French) let’s get this straight, charts or no charts, there’s no need to put Akon or the Black Eyed Peas on house records. Guetta, Larry Levan is turning in his grave.

Stand out tracks for myself this year have been Major Lazor’s ‘Pon the Floor’ for the WTF! screwface expressions at dancehall nonsense at house speed, Fake Blood’s ‘I think I like it’ for the sheer cut and paste funk and string section and Grum’s 80’s electronic winner ‘Heatbeats’.

The Push Music best of 09 is currently on a crashed hard drive (Merry f*cking Chrimbo Dell) but once it’s recovered it will be up to kick off 2010 in style.

Happy New Year.

Bill

NYE with Push Music

NYE

The only place to catch Push Music over New Year’s Eve is a cheeky warm up set in Dalston before I dash to Islington to catch Olly from the Macabee’s spin at Zoo Year’s Eve.  Drinks, good friends and an old school boozer to see the New Year in (sounds good to me)

If you’re game for a few pre NY drinks, the Hobby Horse’s first New Year’s Eve kicks off at 8 with Push Music.

Like the greatest mix tape ever made we’re going to be spinning everything from Electro to disco, Funk and Soul, there’ll be some Indie and Rock ‘n’ Roll, expect hidden treasures and guilty pleasures, 80’s favourites and 90’s classics.

The juicy details and guestlist instructions:

Guestlist and Face book group for NYE at The Hobby Horse

More info on Zoo Year’s Eve at The Old Queen’s Head

Cheers!

Bill
